Day 77: Lockport to Gates NY

Today’s Route: Erie Canalway bike trail – stone dust surface

Today: 61 miles. Total miles: 3772      Riding time: 5 hrs 20 min
Elevations:  Lockport: 614’     Gates: 575′
Total ascent: 1666’  Total descent: 1729’
Calories: 2975    Avg speed 11.42 mph   Max speed 17 mph

Smooth surface for the whole ride – very relaxing – no vehicle traffic to watch out for! Beautiful scenery and some beautiful homes fronting on the canal. Several large boats passing thru the canal. Passed numerous bicycle and pedestrian traffic on the trail. As I neared Rochester, noticed much gang graffiti with colors along the trail. Riding on the trail is a welcome break from riding on the roads – much more comfortable and less stressful without the constant car and truck traffic!

Genessee Valley COPS president Ellen Guerdat and several officers (see photos below) greeted me at the Brockport lock, along with Billie Rife, Mother of Sergeant Clifton Rife II, Metropolitan PD, DC, EOW 6-2-04. Continued on the Canalway to Gates. After Jeanne and Ellen and Officer Mike TerHaar met me at Gates, Ellen treated us to a delicious dinner at Valicia’s – great Italian restaurant! Parked overnight behind the Gates Town Hall and PD.

Must be a new cost-saving way to pave a highway! Better than not paving it at all - have seen a lot of deteriorating roads across the country

Brockport Welcoming Gang! Ellen Guerdat, Pres. Genessee Valley COPS, Monroe County Sheriff Deputy Griesy, Trooper Chris Kowalski, Jim, Brockport PD Lt. Mark Cuzzupoli, Monroe County Sheriff Deputy Brian Unterborn, Brockport PD Officer Steve Mesiti!

Next to the canal!

Site of bridge collapse in 1859 which killed 15 people. 250 people had gathered to watch a tightrope walker.
